Fundraising is for the Holocaust Study Abroad Program Stan State Study Abroad The Holocaust was an unprecedented genocide which was the central event of modern history and of modern or all of Jewish history. As professor Yehuda Bauer argues, the Holocaust, as a human event, can be a precedent or a warning. It is our mission to make the Holocaust a warning. At Stan State, as part of our fundamental mission to create an informed public for a global democratic society, we strive to expand our students and community members' intellectual and geographical horizons. In times when hate crimes, racism, xenophobia, and antisemitism are on the rise and are threatening our democracies, we believe it is essential to learn the lessons of the Holocaust. As the last survivors enter their last stages of their lives, we cannot rely anymore on their direct testimonies, we need to educate the next generation of educators to make the Holocaust a warning. Survey after survey show that Holocaust education and knowledge is on decline, therefore, it is paramount to take the lead in Holocaust education as part of our mission to foster an informed public for a democratic society. It is a unique opportunity for our students as there is no other Holocaust educational program across the San Joaquin and Central Valley. Furthermore, the majority of our students, mostly due to financial constraints, have had little opportunities to travel beyond the Central Valley, let alone abroad. By contributing to this program, you will not only be collaborating towards our fundamental educational mission, but you will be providing a unique and rare opportunity to our students. Remembering a dedicated educator
Remembering a dedicated educator In Memory of Dr. Fred Hilpert, a dedicated communication studies professor for 40 years. Dr. Fred P. Hilpert was a communication studies professor at California State University, Stanislaus from 1977-2011. He served as department chair, helped create Communication Studies, co-founded the University's chapter of the California Faculty Association and was coordinator of the Faculty Mentorship Program when it launched in 1987. He retired for less than a year, returning in 2012 as one of the founding creators of Extended Education's Bachelor of Arts, Social Science program. Dr. Hilpert's failing health was a contributing factor in ending his tenure at the University, which lasted more than 40 years. In that time, he left an impression on fellow faculty and students alike. Fred was twice named Outstanding Professor of the Year, and his reach extended beyond his classroom and Communication Studies. To honor Dr. Hilpert’s legacy, his loving family has established the Dr. Fred P. Hilpert Memorial Scholarship to support first-generation, communication studies students with financial need. A memorial gift will be a lasting tribute to Dr. Hilpert and will be meaningful to the scholarship recipients who will continue to benefit from his dedication to enriching lives through education. Faculty members at Stan State have seen firsthand many of the hardships COVID-19 has created for Stanislaus State students. As we look into the future, an endowed fund serves to prepare the campus to perpetually support those students who will come after us in the quest to change their lives through education. Building the Campus Cares Endowment will help ensure the vision CFA initiated will continue as time passes. CFA is leveraging previous contributions and adding new resources to grow the CFA Campus Cares Endowment to $100,000. A meaningful way to memorialize Dr. Byrd's love of chemistry and his dedicated service. In Memory of Dr. Jim Byrd, Professor of Chemistry, a dedicated faculty member for 35 years. Stanislaus State is deeply saddened by the recent loss of Dr. Jim Byrd, emeritus professor of chemistry and a Stan State faculty member for 35 years. Dr. Byrd joined the Chemistry Department faculty in 1974 and taught until retiring in 2009. As an Analytic and Inorganic Chemistry professor with a specialization in kinetics, his long and distinguished career included serving as department chair for 17 years (1988-2005) and being honored as the 1995 Stanislaus State Outstanding Professor. (Above photo is from 1995.) Dr. Byrd performed chemistry "magic" shows for decades at Central Valley public schools, sharing his love of learning and science. In addition, his scholarly research was published in national and international journals. He was also recognized for his work in training K-12 teachers and improving science education. To honor Dr. Byrd’s legacy, the family has established the Dr. James E. Byrd Memorial Scholarship to support chemistry majors. A memorial gift will be a lasting tribute to Dr. Byrd and will be meaningful to the scholarship recipients who will continue to benefit from Dr. Byrd's passion for learning. Dr. Byrd passed away on October 28, 2020 at the age of 78 from complications from Alzheimer’s and diabetes. Hands-on experiences with reptiles, insects, skulls and fossils, along with interactive demonstrations and lab tours, allow visitors to discover the Students of all ages and their families will have the opportunity to explore the world of science for free at the annual Science Day and Science Saturday events hosted by the College of Science at Stanislaus State. Hands-on experiences with reptiles, insects, skulls, and fossils, as well as demonstrations and lab tours, will allow visitors to make discoveries in a variety of fields including biology, chemistry, computer science, geology, mathematics, physics, psychology, nursing, and child development.
